Autumn Goldfinch

A goldfinch perched on one of my garden set props, imaged from my hide, with the foliage behind creating a nice autumn coloured background

Male Great Spotted Woodpecker

Imaged on a hawthorn tree, from my garden hide. I now have peanut butter and suet pasted on the side of the tree, just out of shot so you can't see it in the image when taken from the hide position

Imaged on one of garden bedding plants, bathed in soft morning sunlight

Blue tit in early light

This juvenile blue tit was perched, ready to hop onto a feeder, on one of my setup prop branches. Imaged from my hide.

Macro hoverfly

Took handheld in the garden whilst just standing and waiting near a bush they favour in the summer

Red squirrel in bokeh lit woods

I took this image of the red squirrel from being lay down. That way I could get the sun glimmering through the tree tops as well

Blue tit

Blue tit in winter light. Imaged from my garden hide, perched on a broken beautiful mossy branch that I found in the local woods near a stream

Kingfisher

I took this image on the banks of the River Mersey surrounding Woolston Eyes nature reserve in Warrington. I knew they were there, but it took several days to get this shot

Female Blackbird

Imaged from my hide in the garden, the blackbird is normally a ground feeder so it was nice to get this female up on one of my perches. Often overlooked in the garden as a simple plain black or brown bird, but beautiful when imaged in the right light

Macro hazelnut

My hide is under, or in !!, a hazel tree. The freshly fallen nuts, once the flower head dies back, have stunningly rich colours. I placed this one on an old tree stump, and contrasted it against a fallen acer leaf from nearby my Koi pond

Winter robin

I've had this mossy old stone under my feeders for some time. It just catches the morning sun nicely. Everything fell into place when this robin hopped on just at the right time

Backlit fawn

I imaged this young fawn at Dunham Massey deer sanctuary. The autumn sun was low and I was shooting almost face on to it, giving a lovely backlit glow to this young animal

Red squirrel eating hazelnut

This image was taken at Formby Pinewood, a National Trust owned site. I took along some hazelnuts as they are a natural food for squirrels. The squirrel facing the morning sunlight really made this image pop, for me at least :)

Morning swan

A distant image of an adult swan, taken at Woolston Eyes nature reserve in Warrington. Even though being far out on the lake I was able to reach using my Sigmonster (Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 lens)

Juvenile female Tufted Duck

Imaged from the banks of the river mersey surrounding Woolston Eyes nature reserve. The calm waters enhanced the beautiful warm toned reflections

Grey heron

I took this image on a local duck pond near my daughters school. This particular image appealed to me as it shows lovely detail on the curving of its neck as the bird preens itself

Otter

One of those moments you don't forget! I was on the banks of the river Mersey imaging Kingfisher when this otter suddenly appeared. As it turned out, it was the first ever pictorial evidence of an otter on this water. It made quite a stir in the news. Right place at the right time. Everything fell into place, even the direction of the sunlight and the lovely reflections in the water

Macro lichen

Walking around Mere Sands wood nature reserve and taking a closer look as you pass through the woods you'll notice beautiful lichens and mosses on the old trees. Perfect for macro photography!

Autumn oak leaves

The beautiful colours of autumn are nice and vibrant in this image of fallen oak leaves, as they are backlit by the morning sunlight. Taken on a walk through a local park in Warrington

Early winter Greenfinch

Taken from my garden hide, this winter Greenfinch is feeding on sunflower hearts that are placed within my perch

Macro Ladybird

Taken in the garden using a tripod to enable me to have a greater f-stop, and therefore more depth of field. A cable release is a must for this type of image to avoid camera shake

Whitethroat at the reserve

I took the image of this female Whitethroat at Woolston Eye’s nature reserve in Warrington. The early morning sunlight gave warm tones to the cow parsley that the bird has hopping across

Portrait of a mute swan

This mute swan was gently floating up the canal, along with two of its signets. Being very inquisitive birds it was easy just to sit on the banks every 30 yards or so and get close up portraits of the birds as came up to me

Autumn acorns

A simple picture of fallen acorns and leaves on the grass, being softly lit by the low morning sunlight

Otter
